Backup frequency and retention: how often is my data backed up?
We back up every night, preferably between 1:00 and 6:00 a.m. How long the backups are kept depends on the product: on servers with a panel and on hosting plans, it is 14 days. Servers also get a platform backup of the entire server. All backups are stored separately from the server at a second location in Germany. For the technical setup of the backups, see Backup and hardware of our servers.
Key facts
Section titled “Key facts”| Product | What is backed up | Retention | Restore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting plans (web hosting, SHOP-Hosting, WordPress) | daily, everything in the panel | 14 days | yourself in Plesk |
| Servers with a panel (Managed, Shop, Pimcore, WordPress servers) | panel backup every night: files, databases, emails, configuration | 14 days | yourself in the panel |
| plus platform backup of the entire server at VM level | at least 7 days | via support | |
| Root servers | platform backup of the entire server | at least 7 days | via support, one snapshot on request (48 hours at most) |
In the panel, you restore files and databases as often as you like, free of charge: see Restore a backup yourself in Plesk. A restore via support is free once per month; after that, each one costs 50 €.
Longer retention: backup extension
Section titled “Longer retention: backup extension”If you need older versions, book a backup extension for longer retention on servers, billed per terabyte. The pricing tiers are listed on the same page as the backup concept above. To book it, open a ticket. If you need your own backup repository with a copy to an additional location, ask about the Proxmox Backup Server.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”You need a version older than 14 days
Section titled “You need a version older than 14 days”In the panel backup, this version has already been overwritten. On servers, the platform backup may reach back a little further depending on the situation, at least 7 days.
Solution: Check whether you have your own backups, and ask via ticket which version is still available. For the future, a backup extension increases the retention period.
Data from this morning is lost
Section titled “Data from this morning is lost”The nightly backup contains the state from last night. Changes made since the backup run are not included.
Solution: For recent versions, only your own backups made right before risky changes can help.
